Hello
My name is Elly Gergova but most of my students know me as “Miss Elly” and I love to swim!
Like most people, I learned the basics of swimming and water safety when I was a young child and once I was able to be in the water on my own, the water became my second home. Soon after I learned to swim, I discovered competitive swimming and began competing on the local level. Success at regional swim competitions opened the door to national and even international competitions. Although I’ve since retired from international competition, I still love to compete. These days I prefer the open water for my training and compete with myself by participating in long distance swimming events. If you ever want to know what it’s like to swim from Long Beach to Catalina Island, just ask (I’ve done it twice).
I began coaching other swimmers when I was 16 and still competing on the national level. In the years since I have coached swimmers of all ages and abilities; first time swimmers to international competitors and I’ve even served as Head Coach for swim teams in Dubai, Greece, Serbia, and New York City.
In the 23 years since I first began to coach, I’ve been fortunate to teach hundreds of people one or more of the following; water safety, basic swimming, competitive swimming, lifeguarding skills, and how to be a swimming instructor or coach. Along the way I realized that I really enjoy teaching, so much so that I became an elementary school teacher and behavioral therapist for children with special needs; including children with autism.
